MY THERAPY APPROACH

Joseph Campbell’s book the Hero’s Journey and therapeutic processes share intriguing similarities, as both involve a transformative journey of self-discovery and growth. This is what happens in my therapy sessions, read on to find out more:

**1. The Ordinary World vs. Status Quo

Hero’s Journey: The hero starts in their ordinary world, which represents their familiar, everyday life.

Therapy: The client begins therapy in their current state, often dealing with familiar issues or dissatisfaction in their life.

**2. The Call to Adventure vs. Awareness of Problems

Hero’s Journey: The hero receives a call to adventure, prompting them to leave their ordinary world for a journey of change.

Therapy: The client becomes aware of their issues and feels a need for change, leading them to seek therapeutic help.

**3. Refusal of the Call vs. Resistance to Change

Hero’s Journey: The hero initially resists the call to adventure, hesitant to leave their comfort zone.

Therapy: The client may experience resistance or fear about confronting their issues and engaging fully in therapy.

**4. Meeting the Mentor vs. Establishing the Therapeutic Relationship

Hero’s Journey: The hero meets a mentor who provides guidance, advice, and tools for the journey ahead.

Therapy: The therapist establishes a supportive relationship with the client, offering guidance, insight, and tools for personal growth.

**5. Crossing the Threshold vs. Commitment to Therapy

Hero’s Journey: The hero crosses the threshold into a new world, stepping into the adventure with a sense of commitment.

Therapy: The client commits to the therapeutic process, stepping into a space where they will actively work on their issues.

**6. Tests, Allies, and Enemies vs. Facing Challenges and Exploring

Hero’s Journey: The hero encounters tests, makes allies, and faces enemies, all of which contribute to their growth.

Therapy: The client faces various challenges, works through difficulties, and explores relationships and patterns that impact their well-being.

**7. Approach to the Inmost Cave vs. Deep Exploration

Hero’s Journey: The hero approaches a central, often dangerous challenge or confrontation within their journey.

Therapy: The client delves deeply into their core issues, exploring underlying emotions and significant life events.

**8. The Ordeal vs. Major Breakthrough

Hero’s Journey: The hero faces a major ordeal or crisis that tests their resolve and leads to significant change.

Therapy: The client experiences a breakthrough or critical moment of insight, often confronting deep-seated fears or patterns.

**9. Reward (Seizing the Sword) vs. Gaining Insight

Hero’s Journey: After overcoming the ordeal, the hero gains a reward or valuable insight that aids them in their quest.

Therapy: The client gains new insights, skills, or understandings that contribute to their personal growth and problem-solving abilities.

**10. The Road Back vs. Integration

Hero’s Journey: The hero begins the journey back to the ordinary world, often facing additional challenges along the way.

Therapy: The client starts integrating the insights and changes made in therapy into their daily life, applying new strategies to real-world situations.

**11. Return with the Elixir vs. Sustained Change

Hero’s Journey: The hero returns to their ordinary world with an elixir or newfound wisdom that benefits themselves and others.

Therapy: The client sustains changes and applies the insights gained from therapy, leading to improved well-being and a more fulfilling life.

In both frameworks, the journey involves a progression through challenges, growth, and eventual transformation, highlighting a powerful narrative of change and development.

I strongly believe that we all experience problems, pain and suffering, just like we all experience happiness, joy and peace. True healing lies in learning how to deal with the rhythms of life more effectively!
